McLaren's Jenson Button won the first Grand Prixof the 2012 season, the Australia GP ahead of his team mate and rival Sebastian Vettel. The 32-year old British driver cruised past his team mate Lewis Hamilton an their dominance prevailed throughout the race.

Romain Grosjean, who won the third spot in pole position unfortunately quit the race due to a suspension problem. Michael Shumacher looked solid in the race before retiring before the 20th lap due to transmission problem.

Jenson Button pushed hard and hard and gradually gained a 10-second lead over the secondly placed Lewis Hamilton, while the latter faced tough competition from Sebatian Vettel. Hamilton however managed to keep the German away from displacing him and stuck to his position till the end of the race.

Mark Webber finished 4th, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished 5th, Kamui Kobayashi came 6th. Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen completed 7th, but made the highest improvement by starting from 17th position in the race. Force-India Mercedes' Paul Di Resta completed 10th managing to earn a point.
