People’s welfare keeps Kalaignar going: Rajnikanth

Superstar Rajnikanth has said that it’s the keen intent to do something for the people that has kept chief minister Kalaignar going all these years.  As he indulges in social work, he gets energy from it and doesn’t get tired despite his age, he observed.

Rajnikanth was speaking at the function to lay the foundation stone of ‘Kalaignar Nagaram’, a small township full of houses meant to be constructed by film employees and small-screen artistes.  The ambitious project had been on the anvil for some time till Kalaignar ‘gifted’ away huge land to enable the film associations to go about the job of building houses.

The foundation stone was laid by Kalaignar at a function held a couple of days ago.  Rajinikanth, when he spoke, said “When Union Minister Dasari Narayana Rao spoke in Telugu, the audience applauded it.  My friend Jeetendra (Bollywood star) asked me what it was all about and how did they understand Telugu.

“I told him that Tamilians have a multitude of talent in them; they can understand Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English.  There’s nothing they don’t know anything about.  Their intellects are very sharp and nothing is beyond their comprehension.  If someone manages to win over the hearts of Tamilians, it’s almost like he or she has managed to win over the support of the whole of the country.

“The yardstick applies everywhere: whether it’s politics or cinema.  I’m very happy that such a function is held today.  I’m not amazed at Kalaignar’s active public work at this age.  He has always been thinking and acting for the welfare of the people, which is a social work, which keeps him going and gives him the energy to work.  I have read in a book that ‘selfish work makes one get tired easily whereas social work gives him the energy to keep on going’.

“It applies aptly in Kalaignar’s case.  I appreciate all those responsible for this project to become a reality.  My advice to the industry folks is that whatever kind of houses they get it, they should take it and enjoy the benefit of this scheme,” Rajini concluded.
