Achuthanandan, chief minister of the neighbouring Kerala, has termed that “Kamal Haasan has played an important role in improving the quality of Indian cinema”.
He uttered those words at the recent felicitation function organized by the Government of Kerala to honour ‘Padmashree’ Kamal Haasan for his various achievements in the film industry and to mark his completing 50 years in films. The traditional Onam festival was celebrate with gaiety and grandeur in Kerala and other parts of the State and the country on Monday. In Kerala’s typical culture, houses were decorated to welcome the festival, which is a huge occasion for celebration for Malayalees. On the occasion, the Kerala Government had decided to honour Kamal Haasan for his ‘continuing services’ to the film industry. The function was held as part of the ‘tradefair week’ organized by the State government in Thiruvananthapuram. Kamal had earlier reached Thiruvananthapuram by flight at 11:00 a.m. He was received at the airport by the city Mayor Jayan Babu and the local MLA Sivan Kuty besides a he crowd of his fans and the public. Speaking to the scribes at the airport, Kamal said that he felt that he owed a lot to Keralites and the State government for deciding to honour him. After presenting a shawl to Kamal Haasan, Achuthanandan said, “The Government of Kerala feels proud to have organized this occasion to felicitate Kamal Haasan. For the past fifty hears, he has been around and the achievements he has accomplished all these years would be very hard to match by anyone. He has played a significant part in increasing the quality of Indian cinema in the eyes of the world,” said the chief minister. Kamal said that he felt thankful for being invited for such a function. He said that it was Malayalam cinema which brought out the ‘real actor’ in him and recalled that he was introduced in Malayalam films by veteran director K.S. Sethumadhavan. “Words can’t describe as to how I feel indebted to the Malayalees. They didn’t bother about my flaws and helped me emerge as an actor in my early days,” he said. |
