 As youngsters a brother-sister, may seem like arch enemies at times, but as they grow older the ties that bind become as strong as the love between them.
The relationship shared between them is not tied with blood bond, but a true relationship that says we care each other. Raksha Bandhan is one such occasion, where the value between a brother and sister is celebrated with sweet memories to cherish in the coming years. Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet. Raksha Bandhan, (Raksha in Hindi – means Protection, and Bandhan – means bond) is celebrated in the month of the star Shravana, on a full moon day. Raksha Bandhan is the bond of protection in Hindi, Punjabi, Oriya, Assamese, Gujarati,Telugu and many other Indian languages is a Hindu festival, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Shraavana (Shravan Poornima). Raksha Bandhan festival is marked by the tying of a Rakhi, or holy thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her as she presents sweets to her brother. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets. It is not necessary that, during Raksha Bandhan, the Rakhi be given only to a blood brother; any male can be "adopted" as a brother by tying a Rakhi on the person, that is "blood brothers and sisters", whether they are cousins or a good friend. |
