|Toyota's rival for Maruti Ertiga compact MPV based on Etios platform|
Toyota Kirloskar maintained the top spot in the MPV market in India since the launch of Toyota Innova MPV. The Innova, which succeeded the Qualis, was the volumes puller for the Japanese auto major. However, the scenario has been changed with the introduction of Maruti Suzuli Ertiga compact MPV. The Ertiga MPV has affected a major share of Toyota's MPV sales and has become the best selling MPV in market within few months after the launch. This has struck the brain wave of Toyota's R and D department to introduce a compact MPV rival for the Ertiga. Toyota Kirloskar has not let out any information about its plans on developing a rival for Ertiga compact MPV, but the move is surely on. The company has just said that it is just looking at this segment for a future product.
Toyota's compact SUV might be based on the Etios sedan platform which is one of the cheapest considering Toyota's other products. Toyota has planned a number of products based on this platform which is aimed at emerging car markets. It is also said that Toyota will build a crossover on the Etios Liva platform. So, this hints the possibility of Toyota to build a compact SUV for emerging car markets like India and other Asian countries.
At present, diesel driven MPVs are received well in India due to the ever increasing petrol price hike. Toyota also has answers to this as it has the 1.4 Liter D-4D turbo diesel engine ready to be used in its future products. Toyota's plans of building a compact SUV based on the Etios Liva sedan is no new information. The Japanese car bran would keep in mind the key factors of local assembly, nominal pricing and a frugal engine to make its compact MPV as success in Indian car market.
